Very sad but I'm really glad he passed away at home peacefully and he didn't feel the need to go to Dignitas, which he was considering in a documentary a year or two ago.

Yes, so do I, although dying at home with your cat on your bed sounds so much better than in a strange house on an industrial site in a foreign country. The documentary on Dignitas really made me feel so sorry for the family members who have to watch their loved ones die that way. It's a quick and clean death but it's certainly not personal. How strange it must be to walk into a house knowing that you are going to die there within the next hour or two, even if it is your choice to do so.

Definitely! I can't imagine how that must feel.
BUT...
If I had to take someone, I would, during my career I've seen some horrible deaths and I don't want that for my loved ones.
Everyone kept telling me they hoped my Gramp lived to see christmas out, I felt awful but I didn't want him to, I wanted him to go peacefully. My step brothers gran was dying at the same time and when I told him how I felt he said he was the selfish one thinking of himself and wanting his nan to stay as long as possible. It's not that I didnt want my gramp to stay, we cared for him around the clock, it was exhausting, but I didn't want to see him suffer anymore and I knew how it finally ended.
To be at home is everything to most people. It's nice that it was peaceful and with his cat for company.

I agree completely. When my husband's dad died from a dissected aortic aneurysm, we were told he'd die within 24 hours. It took 16 days! Although it gave him the opportunity to say his goodbyes, it was very drawn out and exhausting. Our eldest son was just 8 months old at the time and we didn't know if we were coming or going.
I'm really sorry about your Gramp. xx

Yes it is a sad loss, my mum died of a brain tumor that caused dementia and its a horrible death, if I was diagnosed with dementia I would want to go to dignitas as well, whats the point of suffering a long degenerative desease that is never going to get better and to end up being fed, washed and wear nappies.....no not me either x

Thank you Emma.

I totally agree Bev. The one saving grace about losing your mind is that you don't know once it gets to a certain stage. When it's your body letting you down its even more cruel to the patient suffering. Both are heartbreaking to watch xx
