so do they take care of the nest till the eggs hatch or do they just do it till they have finished laying?

Guarding the nest
The females spend normally at least a week building a massive mound of leaves and bark. They will sit on top and guard the nest mound for up to one week after laying. They will open mouth and try to bite if you go near. If you point a heat sensor at nest hole it is almost exactly 29c! Truely amazing tortoises.
