-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Turtle Culture In Asian religious mythology, the Earth was born by three elephants which stood on the back of a giant turtle, symbol of the primitive oceans. The I-Ching or Book of Changes, an ancient Chinese code, was said to have been inspired by the King Tsang Hieh, when walking along the banks of the river Loh, and a turtle rose from the water and on its back were beautiful markings which suggested to the king all the different combinations of things and so he invented the I-Ching. The I-Ching is actually identical in structure to the genetic code - a 64 permutation binary system. Looking at the back of a beautiful Asiatic spiny turtle, we see the pattern of scutes on the shell, which resembles a brazen sun, with streaks of light, we count 12 scutes on each margin (the 12 months of the year) and then four lateral scutes on either flank (the four seasons) and then five cental scutes (the five elements). Perhaps this is the origin of the I-Ching creation story. |

I'm sure this is what Terry Pratchett based his 'Discworld' books on! Googled some images!
