Tortoiseguy I have helped out alot with the breeding of these animals over the few years I have kept them and studied them at great length learning many new things to help propagate this unique animal in captivity some are sent to european collections to introduce new blood to a very small genteic pool.
The female offspring I have are spoken for one will be hopefully joining a UK male (unrelated to her) and the second probably staying here to replace her mother who is possible elderly now and barron from breeding as she hasn't taken the last two matings , they do have a long life span 27yrs recorded but sexual activity reproduction wise is short usually up to 10yrs of age in captive animals from the few records of 3 bandeds bred in the states, the first 3 banded bred in captivity in europein 2000 was in a polish zoo called Poznan who have a good record of breeding various dillo species.

Males are surplus at the moment in the breeding programme as so few females are available for them to pair too and when i have them available they are sold onto selected pet homes or if required passed on to zoo collections until a female of unrelated genes is available to pair with him ,

The more I look at them, the more unreal they seem. Nature sure came up with some interesting creatures.

Jacqui I can't tell you how strange they are unique is all I can say, armadillos have chaged very little since prehistoric mammals evolved , except size, an armadillo existed the size of a rhino once

Vee i didn't wait to find out the male just tried to pry his front legs open I would imagine he would of got bored but great damage would hae been done .

Captive diet;

They eat a mixture small insects (meal worms, morio worms, waxmoth grubs, locusts) they also have finely chopped pears and other fruit small amount of cheese cubed, grated boiled egg mixed with a comercial insectivore mix and kitten biscuits .

They will eat finely minced rabbit and chicken meat too but I don't offer mine this as it very messy.

They also have cuttle fish and nutrabol on there food and a cuttlefish bone left whole which the females eat daily

Wild diet; They eat termites,ants fruit and both bird and reptile eggs.
From dead animals gathered there stomach contents also had reptile scales and possible carrion in them also, the are not a specialist feeder but omnivourus.

Brilliant pictures Darren, i love your Dillo's they are so tiny and stunning creatures. It amazing how many you have been able to breed, where other people have failed. They must be very happy with you. Keep up the amazing work you are doing with your dillos and all the other rare animals you have! you are a very talented man!

Are the babies born looking like mini adults? How long are they dependent upon her?
