Default My baby, Toby.

He decided he would fly over for a visit last night. He's only just started flying again since growing back his wing feathers so he's not very good yet. It's a bit hair raising when a bird his size throws himself off the top of his cage and comes hurtling towards you. It all seemed to be in slow motion. He hit me square in the chest and said, "Hello".

He's just gorgeous Wendy. It must be lovely having him flying.

It is nice to see him fly again but it's a bit worrying that he has little control and has landed on Max's cage Max is very territorial and will bite Toby if he gets the chance. It gets a bit hairy at times. Plus I'm the only one who can handle him so if I leave the room and he flies all hell breaks loose as the others are scared of getting bitten.

Do you alternate between opening their cages to let them have a fly around?
My dad had a lesser sulphur crested cockatoo when I was a child and she was so clever she could let herself out her cage and wander down the hall. A tie twisted around the door took her minutes to undo and they had to resort to a padlock in the end, because my mum was (and still is) petrified of birds! Bengie was wild caught and still a young bird when they got her. She'd had her wings clipped and used to run about all pigeon-toed on the floor. I was only about six years old but she'd sit on my dad's shoulder and pull the hairs out his ears. She loved a stroke of her head but I think everyone was quite wary of her beak! It was a shame that she wasn't allowed out of her cage much because of mum. In hindsight, dad should never have got her.

We have Toby's cage open most of the time. He starts plucking if he's shut in for any length of time. Max doesn't like flying and prefers to sit on our shoulders but he doesn't like to be out of his cage for long and goes back in after half an hour or so. We can have him out at the same time a Toby. Merlin, the conure has a couple of hours out in the evening after Toby goes to bed. And Echo has time out in the evening too, but he isn't as trained as Merlin yet so doesn't stay out for long and mostly stays near his cage. Not sure what I will do when Echo comes out more, I'll maybe try Merlin and Echo out together and see how they get on. They do seem interested in each other through the bars but I worry they may fight.

Never a dull moment here Emma.

The sort of talk to each other. When Max squawks, Toby tells him to shut up, or say's good night, as sometimes if someone he doesn't know visits he will make so much noise we have to cover him and Toby associates that with bed time. Max often shouts, what's going on or what the matter when Toby makes his noises. Merlin doesn't talk. Echo say's Echo boy, come on, dibby dibby dibby, we have no idea what why he says it.

People tell us it's noisy but we don't notice it any more, it's just background noise. I do wonder what the decibel level is in the aviary sometimes. With 9 budgies all chirping at once it is quite loud.
