What do you think??
Hi
Ive been on preloved and fallen in love with a little horsfield tortoise I really should stop looking on there lol. Ive contacted the seller and he is sending me more pictures and info when he gets home from work later. I just wanted to ask a couple of questions before I commit to buy. The tortoise has been kept in a fish tank with reptile lighting and a heat mat Do you think this could have caused any problems? They are only willing to sell the tortoise with the tank but I will NOT be keeping him in there! Poor little thing Is there anything I should look out for that would show a problem? Ive been told the tortoise was bought from a pet shop too. I really want to rescue this little tortie and give him a life of luxury Im sooooo excited to have found a tortoise so close to where I live but Im scared that the living conditions may have caused him problems. Thanks in advance for your help, Joanne xx

What does it look like in the pictures....smooth or bumpy shell, dull eyes etc, i keep looking on there to, i shouldnt but i do, im in thd process of getting an 8 year old male tortoise from birmingham, picking him up in about a week, i already have 3 female horsefields, when the bug hits you it hits you hard ha ha. Its annoying that they wont sell without the tank, money means more, but you can keep it as a sick tank if your tort gets ill etc, i hope the little one is ok, i got 2 of mine fron a pet store, they didnt look good at all but are now in good health with alot of tlc and correct environment and diet x

There is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping a tortoise in a viv. In some circumstances it is better than a table which is what one new member is finding out with their new tortoise.
Good nutrition and good environmental conditions are the key regardless of the enclosure. If the tortoise is well formed(looks like it should)and healthy looking... it is active and eating... has good weight... there should be nothing wrong with it. I'd suggest you research it a bit further before diving into it. Quote:

Thank you EJ
Ive been told he is active and loves to roam around. He has been kept on wood chippings and fed vegetables and pellets. He said he also feeds cucumber and kale. Joanne xx

What does it look like with such horrid treatment?
I would like to see a photo of the setup and the animal. I'm willing to bet the animal is going to look quite good.

That is just fine. There is not much clutter. Everything in the enclosure seems to have a function. Russians really don't need evening heat for the most part.
The enclosure could be streightened up a bit but that is more for looks than anything else. The tortoise looks like it is well cared for. That enclosure looks to be 3ft X 1.5ft in floor space which is pretty good for a tortoise that size or a little bigger. How long has the owner had the tortoise?
