I happen to keep a decent sized group of adults in a large outdoor pond. They are an incredibly hardy species able to withstand extreme temperatures even in winter. They are voracious feeders and reproduce beautifully. The animals I have are of the larger variety with males being roughly 5.5-6" and females 7-8".

I'm no expert with the European ponds but I do know that there are several varieties and some are basically dwarf versions. Many have different color patterns and markings as well. Most of mine are quite attractive but some are duller with carapaces almost solid black.

There are, I think thirteen sub species of European Pond Turtle currently recognised. The species of Emys orbicularis orbicularis, is morphologically very variable and as it has a very wide, pan European range individual populations over the millenia have developed some distinct traits. These include dominant colour of Plastron, size, and other morphological features. However, hybridisation is quite common in captive breeding groups.

Do you keep a communal group - adults and young of mixed sexes together???
I suppose young would have to be kept inside from predators
