I’m no expert but take into the account the weather we are having, there’s nothing better than the real thing

As SCIARA says take advantage of the wonderful weather we are having your tortoises should be out in this any way providing they have a covered run and shaded areas to go in.

hi m8 ur tort will be fine if u get it out in the sun for an hour a day at around middday is best, the uv then is much stronger than any bulb by far, so an hour will be fine as long as the tort is in the sun. This method wont work forever, especially when it isnt summer but it will do fine for a month especially if you dont have a quick growing tort.

Most sources recommend 8-12 hours of daylight (and Uv) per day.
Personally Id get one sorted as soon as possible or work on making a secure enclosure in your garden area. I would not leave a baby without UV for a week let alone a month as they are growing all the time. Personally Id work on getting one immediately or if the financial situation doesnt permit this the consider rehoming or selling them. What would happen if Jerry was to get ill and need a vet. Any pet owner has a responsibility to ensure that they make provision for their care. Sorry to sound harsh but if you cannot provide a garden and the tort no longer has UV with no prospect of getting one then you are not giving them what they deserve. They really need a powesun or t-rex UV lamp if they are indoors all the time. A forescent tube doesnt provide adequate UV throughout their relatively short life. Sufficient for colder months perhaps but in no way an alternative to direct sunlight. |

i agree you need a uv light soon, but an hours sunlight has more uv than many hours under a t rex so try and get your tort outside for now.
Claire is right about the vet thing though, u should have a little stash for your tort in case of emergency. |

I dont know the measurements of UV, but in the wild torts bask for hours in the sun. The sunlight may have far more superior UV but while indoors during daylight hours in my opinion it is best to provide additional UV. Mine incidently are outside but even when they chose to go in the greenhouse they still have powersuns in dull weather.
The more UV the better. I wouldnt settle for just an hour but I totally agree with Carl that it is a start. What kind of accomodation are they living in CPX? |

Do you live in a flat perhaps there is a balcony your tort could go on or even in front of an open window, but put some mesh or netting over the container in case a bird etc takes a fancy to him, an old draw or large container to put him in, I,m sure with a little imagination he can get some sun. Don't take this wrong guys but I think some of your comments were a bit harsh, after all people come on the site for help and advice and I'm sure some of you have had hard times but still love your pets and to be told to consider getting rid of him must have been very upsetting.
