Default Help 6 newborn guinea pig babies

My female guinea pig had two lovely baby guinea piglets yesterday sometime before lunch. They both seem fine and have even been nibbling at mums dry food. I opened the hutch again at lunch today to have a quick check on them to find she has had another4!

I know guinea pigs can have up to 6 but i've read they really struggle to raise that many and its quite common to loose a few. Is there anything i can do to help? I've read giving them cows milk at room temp with bread helps but dont want to risk it without confirmation first.

THANKS

Baby guinea pigs are able to eat the same food as adults from the word go so just go ahead and give plenty of weeds, carrots & carrot tops, grass, hay, & good quality guinea pig mix. Also, make sure they are able to reach the water bottle (presumably you have one!). Congratulations!

Thanks Sylvia, as you can proabably tell this is my first litter. Never gave the water bottle height a thought but i'll make sure i lower it. Been putting loads of fruit and veg in for mum and making sure there is pleanty of dry food. Just had a peak and the smaller one seems to be doing ok *touch wood*

We used to breed Guinea Pigs many many moons ago, the best thing is to leave mum to it, and just make sure there is plenty of food for them all. When we has the little ones, we would also leave one of the shallow plantpot saucers with water in for the little ones. The biggest litter we had was 5, so well done for 6!

I had a litter of 5 last year and mum struggled, so after advice from Darren I supplemented the two smallest of the litter to give mum a bit of a break and them the boost they needed to compete with the others. Can't remember exactly what they had, think it was either puppy or kitten milk!
