New Box Turtle....
I went to collect a couple of hinge backs on Saturday and came back with this fella also......
He was a pet in a Hairdressers for 14 years (???? I know???) The hairdressers closed down and this fella was looking for a home.... I thought he was very handsome and decided to give him/her a go... I know he is a box turtle, from North America.... but that's about it. What subspecies/gender is he please? Should I be worried about the upper left hand side of his shell? The kids named him Spike... so I hope it is a boy!

It's a female Gulf Coast box turtle, Terrapene carolina major.
That is a bit red isn't it. Try to keep her dry for a few days and post another picture Louise. Danny

From my experience this is a female intergrade between a 3 toed, carolina.
Too small for a gulf coast and is captive bred. Colouration and size of tail makes it difficult to sex but best guess is female. Also due to the fact it is an intergrade very common in Boxies! Enjoy.

My vote goes with a drab Eastern Box Turtle or intergrade of such.

When you compare it to this one from Kentucky...
I had to get rid all of my Boxies when I moved to Georga but the up side is I occasionally find them in my back yard. ...and this other one from New Jersey... It should still be residing in the NJ Pine Barrens. So... while it is a nice looking Boxie... it is a little on the drab side. Unfortunately it can be anything. Desert boxie also comes to mind. You also can't really rule out Mexican influence. I have seen Easterns and 3 toeds that look similar to that.

Wow they are beeeeeautiful. Everything seems to be on the 'drab' side on this side of the world.... LOL I can't imagine how exciting it must be to find a box turtle in your garden. Did you have to get rid of your Boxies because of restrictions in the law Ed? Could you not get a permit or anything?
I have just made a 'wormery' for her.... it beats going out in the rain to dig up worms for her dinner
