Recycling!
Dont throw away any fruit/veg containers with holes in the bottom. Especially the ones with a click lid such as cherry tomatoes come in. I find these particularly useful as they act as their own " mini greenhouse" & I can put them on the floor outside my food greenhouse without danger of local cats thinking theyre a litter tray! I use broken pieces of polystyrene or small stones for drainage & add calcium to the top soil, chuck in the seeds, click the lid shut, there are holes in the top for watering & when the weeds get too big just loosen the top & they bush out. This is an old table that had seen much better days! I drilled holes in the base, filled with rubble, then top soil & am using it as a raised weed bed. |

I usually just sprinkle in some limestone flour but had been given a lot of pots of nutrabal, vionate etc, (together with newcomers!) & had too much to use in time, so have sprinkled in some of those instead.
I think you can also use natural chalk & Chris (redfootmarge) uses special volcanic soil with about 78 minerals in it. |
