Obviously the drilled shell was common practice years ago, however these days it is seen as a cruel way to have kept a tortoise from straying. The ring has been removed by her new owner.

i was only telling my son this morning how many years ago it was common practice to drill and put a ring in to stop them wondering off then i saw this,
