Dead in shell?
How can you tell if an egg that hasnt hatched at the expected time is a 'dead in shell' ?
Has anyone any info on this please? |

Sorry the only way I know is to open the egg up. But I wouldn't do that until its way past hatching time.

I have one of these Alley. I realise they are a lot of money but maybe you could look for a used one?
https://www.avitronics.co.uk/index.asp It tells you if there is a heartbeat in your egg or indeed not |

It has a picture of a chick which flaps it wings if movement is detected. There is a picture of a heart which stays black & emits a flat line if no heartbeat detected or "beats" & the line is active & its then shows you beats per minute if a live hatchling is in the egg. ( usually mid to high 60b's,per minute)
Its ashame you don't live closer we could share this! |

don't mean to sound daft but could you use a stethoscope? would you be able to hear a heart beat.

Yes that's right I got mine from same Lady I got my elderly Herman's from.
Its hard Alley, I had one last summer got to 79 days &still hadn't hatched. I knew there was a live hatchling in the egg so had left & left it. I did then decide to intervene & open the egg but the hatchling died a few days later - either way I would say he wasn't meant to be. |
