This is Frank our male hinge. About 5-7 years old.

Like box turtles which have joints on the front and back and underneath hinges have this trait only on the back of their shells either side. they have flexible joints to enable them to close up their rear completely. It's a defence mechanism. Pitty I don't have any pics showing this in detail. I'll take some soon and send them to ya.

Those hingebacks are fantastic looking animals. I checked the environment they need and its just too much heat and humidity for me to get involved with any of those, due to lack of space.

I read elsewhere that a large consignment of them has been seized by customs and excise and will need new homes.
