the little I know about them is the self balasted has a small ballast internally. It shortens the life of the bulb compared to the ext. ballasted type. And they are combined uv and heat. nothing needed with the megaray. You might want a ceramic for night time heat.

The 60W megarays are externally balasted, so have a seperate balast like the silver box in this pic:
Most people have the 100W which has an internal balast. They produce UVB and heat. check out megaray.co.uk

Please note with the 60w ext. ballasted megaray you WILL need extra heat as they give off very little.

Which ones do you guys get, and do you just use ceramic fittings with a dome on them? cheers phil |

You need a standard ES fitting with Ceramic socket - any of of the holders in my holder section will be ok apart from the 5.5" Clamp Lamp.
Most people go for the 100w SB http://www.kimbosreptileworld.co.uk/...ted-p-143.html When installing you rlamp its important that the bulb is positioned above your basking site facing directly down not at angles - this is so your torotise does not get any glare from the lights. Also on the box it states min basking distance 12" - Thats the minimum - i would recommend more like 16" - 18" - this will give a better foot print of light and still some fantastic UVB. You can of course buy the lamp satnd, they are great bits of kit, equally the more DIY minded of us can knock somthing together that will do the job equally as well, at a fraction of the cost.
If you do go for the lamp stand go for the Large, i have had that many people buy the small only to come back a few weeks later for the large. Dazza |
