Tortoise Table Question.
Can anyone with a wooden tortoise table please tell me how they stop the wood being soaked in tortoise pee/poo.
Do you treat the wood with a sealant of some kind or do you have another way of treating the wood. If you have used a sealant, which one, as I've seen many sealants on the market but I'm not sure which is tortoise friendly. All advice greatly appreciated. Any links to the stuff I need would be a great help. Thanks Last edited by H20; 20-06-2015 at 04:51 PM. |

I varnished mine with a pet friendly varnish and lined the bottom with stick on vinyl tiles from poundland. I know a lot of people line them with pond liner which would probably give better protection.

I have news paper at bottom and coco coir on top. The coco coir is pretty good to be able to scoop up the unwanted. Sometimes the paper does get a bit damp (usually because of the spray mister) so I just slide the paper out from underneath and re add the coco coir or move the soil around so the paper / wood dries out under the light.
F10 disinfectant in a mister is good to sanitise and then allow to dry out. Sure there are more ideas and set ups though which are good. I prefer wooden tables.

I had mine treated before I bought it. I also put some vinyl down to line the whole table. If you don't have that then maybe get some tarpaulin to line before adding the soil. Clean and scoop as you go, & complete soil change every few months. xx

I purchased large concrete mixing tubs and combined 4 of them to make a 4x6 tortoise table. I made the table to fit the tubs, basically. Then the tubs were filled with cypress mulch (I have a redfoot), with some soil in 2 tubs for plants. I like this b/c I can add all the water I want with no risk at all. Plastic lasts forever LOL.
These pix are from a few years ago (2007) when I originally made the table. Beas no longer fits into the little house LOL! This shows the tubs. In process of decorating: From the side: |

I used pond liner to line a book case I once used....it worked very well. You just had to watch the staples and make sure the edges of the liner were well above tort climbing height x x xx hugs x x x

Amazing. what a gorgeous rabbit he was. I appreciate you can never replace but I hope you have more.? I have long haired guinea pigs but they are all mad, cute but totally nutz.
