Taylor you need to use more than soap, soap does not get rid of all germs.
I use alcohol based gel - no water needed. I clean with milton, but am changing to F10- i have found some on ebay.

Just out of interest do people only use disinfectant when they are changing between tortoise species or is there a need to use it every time your touch your tortoise for your own safe guard?

You really should disinfect your hands after touching any reptiles...torts included.
Even if your tortoise is regularly wormed they are host to millions of different pathogens/bacteria which can cause harm to those with a reduced immunity system, babies, young children and those who are pregnant. Approx 9 out of 10 tortoises will carry salmonella which can at least cause stomach upset but can be fatal in those particularly vunerable to infection. Another reason not to let them wander about the house. In addition you should never wash out your torts feedin/drinking/bathing bowls in you domestic sinks without disenfecting it afterwards. |

We always wash our hands in Carex and then bleach spray the sink and taps that we've been around when changing the torts water/bath water. I don't use anything near the torts enclosure as they may be affected if they came into contact with cleaning fluids.

With one tortoise, I don't make a huge deal of it. I wash my hands and I wash out the sink when Beasley has soaked there, and when my nieces visit, I make them wash their hands, but honestbut I don't go crazy with it. Most healthy adults will NOT get sick from salmonella, so unless there is a small child, or an old or sick person in the house, there's no reason to worry too much.
And actually, so-called antibacterial soaps cause more problems than they cure. They are one of the reasons (along w/ vets and human docs overprescribing abios) why we now have so many abio-resistant bacteria that are causing REAL problems. Info on this here: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol7no3_supp/levy.htm Here's a slightly less technical article: http://www.antibiotichelp.com/ For this reason, I simply use normal hand/dish soap, not antibacterial. |
