EJ - he has a large water dish in the enclosure, big enough to get in to

If you know he uses it... no worry.

If you don't know if he uses it... place the dish in a corner or along a side wall where the dish actually touches the wall.

If it is in the middle of the enclosure the tortoise might not bump into it. Along a wall the tortoise is sure to bump into it.

If you know the tortoise is using the dish... this is a moot point.

Once you know the tortoise is using the dish you can gradually move it to where you would like to have it placed. You also can give up on the soakings.

I didn't know that. Mine do a lot of drinking in the bath, small sips at a time. What about water based foods like cucumber and lettuce, is that beneficial or just misinformation?

You got me there... any oral/nasal intake of water is going to be benificial.

I suppose they are not much different to us in that regard, we could sit in a bath permanently but would have to drink to survive
