Yay ive got my little 2 year old horsfield tortoise and hes got hes own little reptile bath spotlight heating mat and heat lamp yay and its not a horrible tank its a nice vivarium 8)

Hi Tank, congrats on getting your new horsfield!!! Any chance you could post some pics of your tort and set up, cos even a nice looking wooden viv with glass sliding doors is still not good for a tort, also you mention a heat mat, these are not suitable for torts they can burn a tort if placed underneath. If you are going to use it, place it on the side of the enclosure.

tank or vivarium if it is a glass box it still needs to replaced

heatmats can cause burns and are not recommended

what are you calling your little chap

Im going to call him petri the vivarium is wooden and made of oak i think and has sliding glass doors at the front with lots of air vents its very big is there any way i can make the heat mat safer?

hi

not sure why you need the heat mat

you say you have a spotlight and a heat lamp surely these will create enough heat

torts need there heat from above like in the wild from the sun

do you have uv light

If you have a basking lamp you dont need a heat mat, the basking lamp if angled vertically down produces a hot spot, then the area around is cooler so the tort can heat up and cool down, as he pleases, this is thermoregulation.

Even if the viv is large its still not suitable for a tortoise, and will shorten its life span, as mentioned before if you want to keep it, just turn it on its back, and take out the glass doors to allow an air flow, the air vents on the viv are not enough.

Hi im affraid no matter how many vents you have you still wont have enough air circulating so may i suggest you remove the doors turn the viv on its back and use it this way as it will be more like a tort table then. Plus you dont need the heat mat my suggestion is burn it x Nicky
