How can I make my tortoises warmer? - Page 3

The oil filled radiator will help get the room temp up which is great. But you still need a basking bulb to get a hot spot of 30-35C.

The general air temperature is what keeps your tortoise moving.

The basking temperature helps him to digest his food and actually gets him moving in the first place.

If the general air temperature is too low, particularly overnight, it takes too long for the the basking spot to take effect.

Well The radiator is coming on monday, someone has suggested the Arcadia combined bulb which I'm gonna have to order offline, In the mean time would a regular halogen spot light make any difference in heat? cos I can pick one of them up from homebase up the road from me x

It doesn't need to be halogen. A regular light bulb or spot lamp of 100 or 150W is fine. I'm using a homebase mirrored spot lamp for basking because we had it in the cupboard after we went low energy in the kitchen.

Okay fantastic! I'll get one of them tomorrow to keep them a bit warmer, I was gonna get one for extra heat once the Arcadia bulb arrives anyway, Then hopefully my little Rocky will start feeling better,

I'm having to have him tube fed at the vets every other day

It doesn't have to be halogen but those give off more heat than other sorts and the tortoises love the quality of light from them.

Interesting thread.

I don't own a tortoise but I am currently trying to research and get answers on things which is proving difficult.

I would probably be in a similar situation. I live in an old house of which the walls are not insulated. They just threw rubble between the cavities back when my house was built, therefore my living room can get pretty cold.

I own a bearded dragon and one bulb was not heating the Viv up enough and the cold end was too cold, so I had to get a ceramic bulb for the cold end which I also leave on overnight.

I guess it would be even worse for a Tortoise table with it being open top. Is it still possible then..(it seems so), to keep the air temperature up to where it is required around the tort table to keep it happy, active and healthy just by using additional heating and bulbs?
