You asked what I'm doing on a tortoise forum, after I made a statement about many being the only species to interfere in the natural evolution of other species. |

I guess Ed means we are interfering as a result of keeping tortoises at all and that although we individually might be against taking animals from the wild there wouldn't be any captive ones for us to keep and breed if nobody had done so in the past.
I personally don't think this means I shoudn't keep any tortoises but I suppose none of us is innocent, even if we didn't keep any tortoises. Being a human being is such a guilt trip.....................................

I agree that if tortoises hadn't been taken in the past we wouldn't be keeping any.
But I didn't have any control over that, and can only control my own actions now. Yes I could not own a tortoise at all, and if everyone did the same there would be no demand and all tortoises would be wild. I don't have a problem with keeping a pet tortoise though, but I would only buy one I was sure was captive bred. There are other animals I wouldn't own as a pet as I don't think they are suitable as pets, but other people wouldn't have a problem. Everybody has to make there own decision about what is right and wrong. |

Yes I agree with you here. In a way there might be more tortoises if those of us that like them do keep them because the other (less positive) actions of humans would be carrying on regardless.

Yes we have gone totally off the topic of Tracy getting a tHB. I'll be quiet now.

Nice post. I usually take offense on the posts of what 'ed' says... yea... it happens often... you hit the mark.

It's totally on topic... should we mix species or not... what defines a species... ?

Good for you Tracey and I hope he/she is well. I'm sure they'll be fine together. I have a group of ten hermanns 9 of which are thb and the other is T. h. hercegovinensis and I've had no problems. I doubt the size factor will ever be an issue as long as their eventual adult enclosure is large enough. If they turn out to be two males then you may have to seperate but for now just enjoy them.
