boxies and weeds

Hi Darren

Do your boxies actually eat weeds?
I have never seen mine eat them, of course that doesnt mean they dont<g>.
Do they eat flowers?

Sandy i do feed weeds mainly dandelions to the boxies , at first they never touched them a bit spoilt on there diet of chopped fruits and insects .
so what i did was starve them a little only feeding the goodies twice weekly and greens the rest of the time it wasn't long before they were seen eating dandelion flowers and leaves but not had much luck with any other kinds .
Have tried nasturtium flowers they seem to take these on occasion and also white clover flowers but not the leaves .
They are rather shy and if theysee you watching them they head for cover.

I have tried putting in flower heads (lavvies)but they dont seem to touch them. But I wll try
again.
How often do you feed your boxies?
Mine have dandelions growing in their enclosure but dont seem to touch them either.

Hi Sandy
They are now permanently outside so i offer fruit and mealworms twice a week and greens every day, at the moment there eating very little but there enclosure is dense and full of bugs so i think they are feeding for them selves .
As there very shy its dificult to watch them eat without doing one , my enclosure has no natural weeds in it just ferns and bamboo with thick covering of forest bark chips and rotten logs to attract insect life also my little owl resides in the same enclosure he is fed pinK rat pups and the odd day old chick these them seleves attract a host of biddies to the left overs .
On the odd occassion i have seen one of the females eating dandelion flowers she picks them up and runs to cover with them .
I noticed them eating greens more when they were housed inside where aniaml pry was more scarce

Thanks for that Darren, I use leaf mulch at the moment, but maybe some bark can add
some more insects.

Sandy a few decaying logs are great loads of woodlice are attracted to these even a small rotten lump will do .
But as you no i'm new to boxies so maybe i'm not quite right in my care but it does seem to work and they never loose weight so i feel comfortable with the way i do it but i'm certainly willing to learn more .

Well you know I have only had mine three years, and the first year was a big learning curve.
As they are a lot more timid than I thought.
Ed did help out here<g> with saying about the conditions etc. And I checked on a box turtle list.
But like you am still learning. The logs sound great, although not sure where I would get them.
But will find out if I can.
