Dried feed
This may sound like a daft question but I put fresh feed in the enclosure at the beginning of the day and the torts eat as the day goes on. Obviously because of the heat the weeds slowly dry out ( I am running at 32 basking and 26 - 28 cool). My question is do the weeds / grasses etc loose their food value as they dry to the point where it is not offering any goodness? Interested in your thoughts.

That sounds a bit hot ..for a cool end?? Maybe put the feeding area more away from the warmer area of the enclosure but ...i will say that sounds a bit hot for a cool end.
See what others more experienced say. The food will dry out during the day anyway, if you keep it out of the way of the heat, you could mist it with a little water or something, to give it back some moisture. Or perhaps moisten it with a bit of cucumber rind, or juice - this can hydrate the tort as well. Maybe not everyday but it might be nice a couple of times per week. But misting might work better?? See if others can confirm the temp range here...I am no expert on this. xx Good luck. |

I have a couple of young Indian Stars, so I think that the "cooler" end needs to be warmer than normal

My torts eat their food at stages during the day, I keep it in the cooler end and give it a little spray with water before I put their nutrobal on, helps it stick to the food better, or maybe you could split their feed into 2 and give some in the morning, and then some later. I imagine the food would lose some of the nutrients, but then would it be harmful as in the wild they wouldn't always have lush green food.

Thanks, I've been thinking that probably the best way is to split the food into two. Love your vidio's Rach, tortoise with attitude! great.
