Post Best way to provide humidity for my hatchling Hermens

I keep reading posts and articles about how humidity is potentially important to avoid pyramidding. I have two 7 Month old Hermens that I keep in a table and I would like to provide a source of humidity for them.

The current (temporary) table is 75cm x 55cm. The new table I will be moving them to in a few weeks is 100cm x 45cm and has a second floor.

I presume it is important to maintain humidity in a localised area rather than the whole table all the time?
I have seen at least one suggestion about how to provide a 'humid hide' - Attach a damp sponge to the top of an upturned plant pot with a hole for th tot to get in.

If any of you are providing humidity could you share some details of your solutions and any opinions please.

Thanks

The easiest way is to provide a covered section of the table or a plastic box turned upside down and a hole cut in the side. The substrate under the box should be kept moist. Be sure the box is in a relatively warm area.

I think spaghnum moss can be used for humid hides too. Not sure... But would orchid bark help in a portion of the table??? Just a thought ..Ed? What do you think? xx

Thanks for the reply. So it appears ther is nto a lot too it really

I had also read spaghnum moss was good to use Rach, However when I looked into buying this it seems to be mixed with compost... Couldn't find anything that was obviously just moss - maybe i'm expecting the wrong thing..?

Just need to find myself the appropriately sized plaic box

I'm sure garden centers carry raw sphagnum moss. It is usually used as decoration to cover the topsoil of potted plants. Any substrate that holds moisture well would suffice inside the humid hide and this would pertain to any species.

There is plenty of sphagnum moss on the market with no compost in it - here's a selection Amazon are pushing that even includes dried bricks- you can add water to to redydrate it.

I am a fan of the upside down plastic box with a hole for access. The moss can be good but you can raise the humidity just with the box, and if the substrate under the box is sprayed with water in the evening the humidity is very good overnight.

My smallest ones use a cleaned out fried rice plastic tray from M and S. They love it under there and always choose it at night.

Have a look around the lawn, I can find plenty moss in the grass at this time of the year. Pull some out and keep it sprayed then use it as a blanket for your babies!

I've always bought the dried blocks-Surrey Pet Supplies sell them cheaply. You get such a lot from one brick and no waste. Just break a bit off and soak. Only disadvantage is that they drag it all around the table!! I've gone back to using the damp sponge attached to roof of hide. If you give gentle heat at night then you should get correct humidity hopefully
