I use a mixture of different substrates in my tortoise table, sand / john innes mix, beech chips, hemp and some decorative 19mm gravel / stones just for a bit of variety.

All of my 3 tortoises love burying themselves in the hemp at sleep time and dig themselves well into it.

I use a mixture of hemp, sand/soil, wood chippings and stones. They can choose themselves which to bury in, but both mainly sleep in the hemp, I think it holds the warmth.

75%soil 25% sand mix kept moist in one half and meadow hay in the other half with rocks pebbles and loadsa cuttlefish seperating the two substrates from mixing. This is my substrate for leopards.

Sand and soil at one end and hemp at the other. There's a rocky area in the middle. I use slate under the basking lamps, and another piece of slate to feed them on. Both species bury themselves in the hemp at night.
