Smile Home Sweet Home

Hello
We are new to this so please be paitent.
We are in Aberdeenshire, we are Myself, hubby, 3 yr old son and our 3 yr old tortoise.. Thomas (original name i realise, but my son named him)He's a Herminater as my son calls him..
We bought tommy from a breeder in forfar who gave me leaflet with him - although i'm constantly keen to learn more.. my mind is a sponge when it comes to thomas...uni work.. not so much!!
We currently have him in a banana box at the top of the stairs on a side board. The box is layered in newspaper and shreaded paper, he has a hut, basking light, a large cardboard tube he enjoys playing with and a box over his heated mat for snoozles. My other half is building him wooden hut to be used inside and out. He regulary comes down stairs and raids the house to his own pleasure as the weather up here is pretty random, scared he'l blow away.
Does this sound ok? or could i be doing something better... I value any help, thanks
Thank you so much for reading this,
Take care
Lucy & co
Aberdeenshire

HI Lucy, I would suggest a look throught he housing and picture section to get ideas which would be better for your little chap as he will quickly outgrow a box plus you will have problems keeping it clean and dry. You mention a basking light is this UV or heat or a combined bulb. I don't think heat mats are recomended for Hermanns so would stick with one of the above options for lighting/ heating.

Again i would stress looking through old posts on here to get great ideas, I did. Just out of curiosity do you have the supliments needed for a tortoise.

Good luck and enjoy Thomas.

Hi Lucy I'm in Scotland too and now have a few years experience with keeping these mediterranean animals in our climate. It can be a bit trickier than it is for some of our pals down south who tend to get warmer and sunnier summers. If you are new to it you might decide to keep your tort up this winter rather than grapple with hibernation. Do give us a shout on here if we can be any help!
