Driftwood and Torts?

Hi there folks, bit of a strange one here...I put a nice piece of driftwood in with my wee horsfield and as soon as he discovered it, he began chomping at it furiously! I got to thinking is it because the wood will have a high salt content and would it be harmful? is it a bad idea to include it in his table? I have removed the piece for now. The wood is a gnarly piece of tree, worn smooth

appreciate your thoughts on this one
