Default First time buyer

Hi i am rehoming a 2 year old horsfield tortoise on sunday. I am doing as much research as possible and getting excited aswell as worried he/she will be coming with everything they need what does concern me is i think the previous owner feeds the tortoise on pellets and from what ive read on the web its not a good idea. So is it a case of puting this tortoise straght onto weeds and flowers or will i have to ween him/her off the nasty pellets?

hi

i would go for a straight clean break bin the pelletts

offer a variety of weeds

keep the tort well hydrated by bathing

and when the tort is hungry it will eat it could take a few days or even a bit longer but that will not hurt the tort just ensure he is hydrated

Hello Tank, welcome to the forum.

Good luck for Sunday and getting your rehomed tortoise.

As for the pellets bin them striaght away.

Only offer weeds, if they are not eaten persevere with it, the tortoise will eat them eventually, sometimes they can be stubborn, sometimes no problem at all, wait and see.

But you must make sure if he / she is not eating that the tortoise is bathed regularly and kept well hydrated, they can survive for a good while without food, and they will eat whats put out for them before starving.

Make sure you add calcium / limestone flour to food every day and nutrabol twice a week.

put the tort in a deep sided container not see through with luke warm water for about 20 mins per day

you can place this beneath the heat bulb to keep it warm have the water deep enough just to cover under shell then tort can drink and soak up water via its rear end

continue with this intil tort is def eating then perhaps 2 or 3 times a week after
