Just take 1 look at the date of the book alot has changed when its comes to the diets of tortoises since then Other studys ect ect over the years more has been found out hence why there diets in captivity have changed At one time torts where drilled into and rope attached so they could not escape and they were fed dog food and milky breed im sure some 1 will come along who knows a hell of alot more then myself .. to sort this matter out . But i think you will find that reference book may be a little dated when it comes to the natural and best diet for a tortoise ... Just my views of cause hope this helps Love Becks xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I know I'm going to catch stuff for this but again there are not many forums where you can get a balanced point of view.
I would tend to take the word of a vet or an animal nutritionist over a fellow enthusiast. This is not to say what is presented is wrong it is to say that it is the idea of one person drawing on his experiences and his particular conclusions and seems to be presenting them as fact. My only point is that you should not rely on any one source of information. I'm going to use this post to address another issue in this thread... Lately some of the newer keepers have mentioned that past references are invalad because of their age... does anyone else see anythng wrong with this? 100 years later and all of a sudden we are smarter than all those that followed. Needless to say those references that still stand and are being used and accepted are being so for a reason. There are many publications that are not referenced because they are not accepted. That's how the system works. Quote:

New research provides new insights but it sometimes is flawed or proves the old "knowledge" right. I try to keep an open mind.
Part of the problem in general with the internet is that anyone can claim to be an expert and post their views/opinions as fact and other people will take it as true (I'm talking about everything here not just tortoises). Certianly in the uk I'm amazed how many people say "oh, you can't believe what they write in the papers" then they proceed to quote some balatant nonsense from the same paper that they do beleive to be true. I'm happy to be proved wrong. |

Nice post. You do understand my point. Thank you.
Just to add a little... I think the older litterature is more valid than the new because of computers. In the past the process was very long and drawn out. If a researcher wanted to be successful he had to make sure he had all his ducks in a row in order to be accepted and be successful. With desktop publishing and the net many people are not as careful because it can easily be corrected if the author actually cares. Quote:
