For most domestic set ups, the choice of species should be paramount. With adult size a major consideration, the Musk/Mud turtle species for north and Central America are a very good choice. An example of a suitable set up: In terms of a care guide: http://www.terrapin-info.co.uk/bottomwalkers.php Last edited by Geomyda; 05-03-2013 at 08:03 PM. |

this is my most recent turtle tank: http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=67597
He is a common musk and as he is male is smaller than females (will grow to about 5 inches). This tank is the minimum size for one adult musk - 40 litres per inch of shell, people don't realize how much space they actually need! Other species need bigger tanks/indoor or outdoor ponds as they grow much bigger. If you do decide to go for a musk (great characters, small, easily avaliable) then i would suggest just getting one. They can be aggressive towards each other (particularly if they are male) and you have to be prepared to have a whole second setup if you do get 2. you need a good external filter ,UV, basking platform and heat light, water heater if you are getting young turtles. Musks need a large footprinted tank and aren't the strongest of swimmers. They need plenty of structures to climb and get air and i reccomend getting floating plants to cling to and make it feel safe. The best substrate is sand (never gravel). They eat commercial pellets eg: reptomin and also fresh fish eg: trout, salmon, aquatic snails, earthworms, live shrimps, bloodworm. A great diet is to make turtle pudding (lots of recipes online). There are videos on my youtube (see sig links) and he has his own facebook (because i'm mental). Happy to answer any questions Louise x A good website: muskturtle.co.uk and RFUK is a forum with lots of turtle keepers too.
