A lot of people do varnish but also another thing that is used is thick plastic sheeting (pond liner) i use lino easy to cut and most carpet stores have offcuts

i like the lino idea, easy to wipe down and as gordon says can buy off cuts very cheaply i will be looking into to covering the indoor tables with some nice lino lol, i use pondliner in the tables and sheds and this works a treat, also easy to clean x

I used self adhesive vinyl tiles on the bottom (very cheap - you can get them in Poundland) and a varnish on the outer sides.
