Default Something strange has happened.

We have had a letter from the Met Police this morning saying we were caught on camera in central London breaking the speed limit on 30th April at 03.25AM, we certainly weren't there at that time of the morning, we were in our bed, but can't prove it.
We have been to our local police station to ask them about this, she told us to write a letter stating that we were not there, or had we loaned the car to anyone or had a break in, (to take the car key) then get it photocopied also the photocopy the letter the Met Police sent us & get it registered post to send it back to them.

This has really upset Len, well me to but he is driving me mad, all he is talking about is this.

Marg.

I wondered if maybe the plates have been cloned.

some scrote has obviously cloned a car by stealing your reg no.
have the police sent you a photo of the "crime"?
is the car in the photo the same as yours?
this happens a lot,so there must be steps to take to clear your name.
OR len's got a girlfriend in london!!!!!

The make will have been taken from your number plate (which I would assume has been mis-read) - so that will all be correct.
What might not be correct is the 'actual' plate of the car in the photo.
I'd be asking for this in your return correspondence to them.

Oh no, that's not right! I must admit I'd be seething if it was me. Sorry, I know I haven't offered any help at all. You'd think, if this is something that is starting to happen more and more often now, that there would be a certain procedure to follow so innocent people aren't getting unfairly hit.

Hi Marg, I'm really sorry you've been upset by this letter. I'd ring the met police. There must be a telephone number or contact details on the letter, what do they want you to do? go to court, pay a fine?
Even the Police get things wrong occasionally. Or your car number plates might have been cloned. If you weren't there, I wouldn't worry too much - luckily we live in a country where one is innocent until proven guilty.
If you really don't get any joy, please let me know. I have the details of a senior met police traffic officer (who is acting as family liaison officer on my best friend's case).
Good luck, Karen

Just futher to what has been said, sorry, but don't ring them.
reply in writing, and make it recorded.
You'll need a paper-trail "just in case", a phone call won't cut it.

As for the senior met traf pol, he won't be able to help... the safety camera partnerships aren't operated by the traffic division.
