An adults' female's anal scutes are like a closed V shape whereas an adult males' are more open. As I said I'm certainly no expert, Dan's the Man, to name but one on here- (don't want to offend anyone ) I'm just learning

Maybe the reverse is true for tortoises, males charging around looking for a mate, defending a territory etc. Go Bindi by the way |

My pics are not very clear at all so I've done a lot of comparing with my torts and Dan's excellent pics and I'm thinking now I may have one of each. I will try to get better pics sometime. I've discovered that directly after a bath is best for extended tail pics. The one that Bindi thought might be male definitely has a longer and thicker tail than the other and it's shell is more rounded while the other is more flat (is that a factor too?)

Now that I look again, the first looks like male and second female. Is the first one's plastron concave? It kinda looks like it to me.

Not really Paul, both just about the same...kinda flat
When I said one was rounded and one was flat I was meaning their top shell Last edited by Alan1; 25-01-2009 at 12:43 PM. |
