Horsfield tortoise won't open it's eyes, lethargic

We recently bought 2 tortoise's from someone. One of them is very active, eating and seems very happy. The other barely moves, doesn't open it's eyes, we've had them for 3 days and I haven't seen it eat yet although it has had a drink. The old owners said one is "lazy", they weren't very knowledgeable about keeping them as pretty much everything they did appears to be wrong from our research.
They were fed these dandelion pellets soaked in water? They've had fresh food since being with s but the one we're worried about doesn't seem interested in even opening it's mouth and trying to eat. It's eyes appear to have a white film over them and seem a bit swollen perhaps? We've bathed it and the eyes which made them look better but still they did not open.

Do they need a vet? If so is there one near Derby?

kattubopatty, so sorry to hear this. I think a trip to the vets is needed quite quick. Could be anything, but white film could be a sign of infection and eyes are very delicate. I can only suggest you try to bathe warm water but keep head out clearly, dampened cotton wool bud on eyes but don't 'drag' and around mouth and try and coax with cucumber under the nose - cucumber does smell so it could encourage eating but think unlikely if he is feeling v poorly. keep us posted won't you. I would suggest stick with fresh food too sounds good.

It sounds like a vet is needed. Even if the torte was shy he would still open his eyes. I think I would also separate them. Hope you get sorted

I'm sorry to hear this, but if the one who won't open his eyes has been like that for a long time, I think it may well be at a point of no return I'm afraid, how big are they? X

I'm really sorry to read this. As the others have recommended, a vet visit is needed as soon as possible. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

Took him to the vets literally after I read this this afternoon. Vet gave him some wormer and antibiotics, he's to go back tomorrow for more. They're only little say 4 inches if that? We're hopeful he'll be ok. Thank you to everyone who has responded I really appreciate it
