They can be hibernated from their first year.
I personally dont hibernate tortoises under 30grms. Once over that they are hibernated.

I used to do a very similar wind down etc when I had my torts but the thread was done by Terrific tort who I don't think keeps/breeds anymore, anyway for the years I did hibernate I had minimal weight loss and the adults would go for around 20 weeks. I used a brick built shed with a low wattage storage heater on a thermostat the shed was naturally cold all year so was ideal, it was unaffected by the outside temp, the torts were in a strong rodent proof wooden box in the same bedding as was used in their houses, at the time it was readygrass. They would go down the mid-end october and would have stopped eating themselves by the mid sept so it made life easier to do the wind down.

That's great. Thank you!! Its nice to have an idiots guide for newbies!! Then you can be sure you're doing it right, I'm going to over winter Darwin this year until I get more confident at tort keeping, but I'll bear this in mind for next year!! x
