Default Siamese Tortoise

I had a Siamese Tortoise pass away hatching from it's egg on Sunday, I've also had two twin eggs and a triplet egg in the past. I've asked on other forums and apart from a few twin eggs others have had and the the Siamese twin that was in a national newspaper last year it seems to be quite rare. I wondered whether anyone else had had any of these experiences.

Regards
Darren

Hi tgidarren, that is a shame, I have seen your photos of your twin eggs and a triplet egg on another forum, are these rare eggs all from just the 1 female?, or do you have more than 1 female laying twin/triplet eggs? To date, I have not seen this in my colony...oh and welcome ...T.T. 8)

Hi TT & Piglet,

The multiple births are from two defferent females. Edna had 1 twin and 1 triplet egg, Chloe had a twin and the Siamese. Incidentally, I've never had a double yolk. All of mine have come from and fed on the 1 yolk. I wondered whether this was the case with all tortoises, it would appear not.
I'll try + post a couple of photos later, though to be honest they might be a bit upsetting to some.

Nice to meet you at Bristol Darren, perhaps next time we'll have time to sit down and have a beer.

All the Best
Darren

Hi Becks,

A couple of years back it was suggested that it was due to the sperm of an over-active male. Personally as I've quite a few females and it has happened twice with only two of mine I tend to think it's genetic. In my case possibly involving the two females and perhaps my dominant male.

Off the top of my head Edna's had around 15 or so fertile eggs with two multiple eggs and Chloe's only had around 8 or 9 with two mutiple births. I've had quite a large number of eggs from some of my other females without it happening and the propotion of multiples with Edna & Chloe does seem pretty high.

Having said that all their other eggs produced some lovely babies. Chloe's other three fertile eggs in this clutch produced gorgeous 16g babies
