When I box my torts up, I use an A4 paper box or the like, and then put them in the polystyrene box. As the polystyrene is more protective than a cardboard box.
The cardboard box is smaller and keeps the tort more secure. But I cant see any reason for not using a poly box as an inner box

No, I used to, but since my tortoises started to bury down into the soil in the greenhouses, I let them continue. As I think they know best
I do box up any that dont bury down. I keep them in the garage, with a heater to come on if temps drop below five degrees.

Can you recommend a thermometer for checking the temperature in the garage please?

Hi
Iam going to be using the fridge method. Ive had the fridge running for a few weeks now and temps seem to be ok at a steady reading of 5. I have fed a tube through the door seal for extra airflow. But i read about opening the door daily for airflow. 1. how long for each day should the door be open? 2. this means that the inside of the fridge will be subject to daylight is this ok? 3.What is the best box to use to box up in a fridge? cardboard or plastic. 4. what is the best substrate to use? soil, shredded paper,or something else. 5. can yearling but boxed together or should the have their own boxes. 6. can a tort that is in quarantinebe housed in the same fridge but on a different shelf?

I use a thermometer that is on one of the boxes, with a probe for inside one of them. And also tells you the outside temps too. I have had mine a long time, so not sure where I got them.
But I am sure either Sarah in her new shop, or Dazza will have them.

Hi
On reading the tortoise house's hibernetion info i think i pretty much know but just want to ask a 'what if' question. If during the last week of wind down which it says the tort is pretty much totally inactive but still being bathed every day (is this right?) he pee's in the bath what happens then? is this an unlikely happening or not? Do i have to wake him up and start over again or cancel hibernation altogether? What causes such a thing to happen anyway? Thanks in advance. He is 47-48mm and 28-30 g. |

With my adults I just bathe them one more time before they go down. I certainly wouldnt start again.
In the last week/days I wouldnt bathe every other day, I would bathe once a week. As they should be more or less in the hibernation mode. Smaller ones need a shorter wind down time, again in the last days of windown I wouldnt bathe every other day, if they dont come out from hiding.
