Margies are breeding

I was doing some work in the garden on sunday and hearg some clonking about then grunting , so i went over to my marginateds enclosure and sure enough they were mating again

.
My female laid 12 eggs this year but unfortunatley they all split on exit ( she has a calcium deficency and is very small for her age)

Spose id better contact defra and get papers sorted for them ( as some people here may not know they came to me from a family whos grandparents had had them since the early 70s and didnt know they needed certs these days.)

I didnt intend on breeding them but as they have id better get sorted out now otherwise if we have successful egg laying and incubating this time ill be stuck with lots of babies i cant legaly sell.

P.s is it a bit late in the year for them to be at it.

yes i think so as at this time of yr sould they not be winding down to hibernate ?

Becks is right in a way med spieces should be winding down but this doesn't mean that males will not still sexually active , i doubt very much your female will become gravid now but next spring she will surely start to show signs of nesting so get that calcuim pupedinto her in preperation

My males are at it from the word go, until they are hibernated<g>. Thats males for you<vbg>.

In my experience and my own findings, this is the time of the year that my male torts are successful at mating, because the females are starting to wind down, therefore they are not as active to evade the males attentions, I have seen my males mating the females as late as November

literaly days before hibernation...I also agree with sandy, given any chance male torts will try at anytime...T.T. 8)
