RIP George - the last of the Pinto Island giant tortoises. Nobody knew his age - some said 80, the news said over 100, I think maybe 130-160 perhaps. I had the privilege to see him a few years ago - he was probably the most famous animal on the planet. He has been a true talisman (talistort?) and ambassador for conservation and the efforts of dedicated people to maintain biodiversity in an ever-shrinking world. The loss of George is so sad - if only they'd found a mate for him. Bye Bye George and thank-you. You will be very very very missed. RIP Big Fella

Great article, Dr Peter Paul Vandijk, was one of the "Keynote" speakers at the International Turtle Breeders Conference held earlier this year in Essex. He is a world renowned Chelonian expert.
