My first Hatchling...
Welcome to the world Olaf (my 2 year old daughter chose the name)
He struggled at first and after 24 hours he was still facing backwards... He eventually figured it out and made a break for it. So small in my hands... Taking a drink Exploring the new enclosure

ooooooooh isn't Olaf simply marvellous !! He is sooooo tiny ! Do you need to keep the temps constant all over ? within a smaller area ? I would worry he would wonder up the other end and get too cold then not move back ? but I admit I have never hatched eggs so don't know ! well done and congratulations ! CB

Thank you. The name is growing on us.
This is my first ever hatchlings as well. I hadn't thought about the idea of being too cold to walk back. I was just thinking of having a warm end and a cooler end of the enclosure. Would a hatchling need a more consistently, all over, warm environment. I'm worried hernia cold up there now. I've turned the light off for bed time as well..

Hes out! Congratulations Eddie
Im not intending this the wrong way but if I may suggest: move the tile from under the heat lamp. My reasons are: they can get very hot. If baby upturns (as they do a lot) it would be harder to right themselves if your not around to help. I find hatchlings prefer the warm side. So I provide soil deep enough to bury themselves ( 2 or 3 inches) and a reptile cave or 2 for them to hide in and feel safe. I water under the cave, place it near the lamp but not directly under and this provides a natural humid hide. My babies emerge with dewy shells in the morning and I find it keeps their shells smooth and them hydrated. |

Thanks for the tips. I will move the enclosure around in the morning. That makes good sense. Not sure why I put the slab under the lamp, wanted a variety of surfaces but will move it to around the middle then place a couple of hides near the heat.

Perfectly gorgeous! I'll never get bored of seeing brand new hatchlings.
Olaf is a cute name. My youngest has Oleg the Meerkat (or meerpup as he insists) and took the adoption seriously by giving him a middle name - Olaf. So we have an Oleg Olaf in the family. I've only hatched once before and it was a single egg so I divided the table to make a smaller area but as you've hopefully got a further 7 to come I guess the table will soon look more full. Can't wait to see the others.

They need a temp gradient, just like an adult tort, and they will move to where they are comfortable, just like a bigger tortoise. But as Lynn has said , keep the substrate deep , 4inches, so he can bury himself, and I found that they do prefer to do this in the warmer end, keep a humid hide, keep the substrate moist under here to creat the humidity. He gorgeous, perfect, well done 👍😀

Thank you. He is doing well, and I am pretty sure he even ate today, it looked like a couple of bites were taken from the leaf, but I wasn't there to see it.
Still no sign of movement from the other eggs...
