Reduce the sand as thats what would irritate the eyes. Soil is the substrate they would naturally have in the wild.

I use pure soil one end and wood chip the other. Fluffy chooses the wood chip to sleep in, he really doesnt like getting his feet dirty in the soil!!!

I've been gradually using less and less sand in the mix. I do use a bit of sand with it still because the soil here tends to be a heavy clay. I also have quite a lot of stones in it, I make sure they are too big to get eaten. I also bring in naturally weathered bits of wood that have been lying in my garden for a year or two.

My babies (ibera 6mths) had been raised with a paper substrate. When I got them home I put them in 70/30 soil/sand mix and it irritated their eyes now got them on soil only and they have had no problems, as they get older I plan to add sand but in small quantities as my other ibera has a 70/30 mix and has no problems with it.

most soil bought from a bag has a high sand content anyway. 99% of the time there is no need to add sand.
