Default Substrate for Hermanns?

Can you use bark or wood chippings as well as hemp for Hermanns?

I used to use woodchippings.
I now use a mixture of 50% top soil and 50% play sand.
This is more natural and they dig in and look a lot mor ehappier in it

people tend to warn against bark chippings because i think they can give off chemicals when heated or something like that. i'm not really sure but someone else will come on and clarify it.
my hermanns are on a substrate of 90% top soil and 10% sand.

Hi

Wood chippings can become toxic when damp, I would recommend sand and soil!

I didn't realise wood chops were no good
what else do you use apart from sand/soil??

I've seen pictures of enclosures & it looks like some use stuff that looks similar to wood shavings. I was going to change to this but don't really know what it is.

I tend to just use the hemp only, as I have tried top soil but notice loads of tiny small flies seem to be coming from the soil. Is deep hemp OK?
