Not kept any as pets, but there are non-native species which are somethimes kept as exotic pets.
Red squirrels are our true british species, sadly they are quite rare now having been outcompeted widely by the introduced grey squirrels.
We did have a very friendly grey squirrel who ussed to come to the door looking for food, but we found him dead on the front lawn a few years ago.

Squirrels dont talk to me about squirrels.

When I first moved to Birmingham (11 years ago) Steve and I had only been living together for a few months with my oldest dog Judy when one night Judy would not stop crying and scratching at a walk in wardrobe door.

Steve opened the door and a squirrel ran out - started to run around the walls of the bedroom, pood and wee'd on the bedding etc...

Steve tried to catch it but couldnt - get trying to bite him.

In the end - the RSPCA told us to call the fire brigade - which we did - because apprantly it is an offence to release them back into the wild.

To cut a long story short - another squirrel came out of the wardrobe too.... they had got into the loft and forced out bricks and an air vent to gain entry to the wardrobe.

Dont know what happened to them once the fire brigade caught them !!!

An interesting story Debs. I expect if they were grey squirrels they will have been destroyed, not sure.
