I can remember a fish supper being 2 shillings and a bag of chips was a tanner (or sixpence, that's 6d which is 2.5 new pence).
So a fish supper was 4 times the amount of a bag of chips. Today a fish supper is £5.60 and a bag of chips £1.20 or in some shops £1.40 so the prices have gone up pretty relative to what they were 40 odd years ago. When I passed my driving test at 17 year old, that would be 33 years ago, a gallon of petrol was just over 50p I think. The garages used to have coin operated pumps that took only 50p's and it was just under a gallon you got. They later introduced £1 machines that you put a £1 note into laid flat in a drawer thing but that didn't last long. Jeez.. I feel quite depressed now |
