Default *read with caution* Terrible Stories

Hi all,

Since i got my tortoise and have been excitedly telling everyone, there has been more people than i thought telling me they ONCE had one. Most tell me they ran away or died of old age but soem have told me about this horrific practice of drilling a hole in their shells and inserting a nail or screw which they can then tie a rope to it which can then be tied to a post to stop them getting away! This is so disgusting- mostly older people told me they did it! (If someone was doing it now, i would call RSPCA) Has anyone heard of this before? Does it still happen? Think i'm still in shock! xxx

HI,

Yes it is terrible but was very comman back in the eighties, thats how my family got a tort, we found the poor thing walking about in our car park and it was dragging a chain, because someone had drilled a hole in his shell and through the flesh, my dad was so upset when he saw this that he decided to keep the tort and heal the hole, knowone ever came looking for him but if they did my dad would not of handed him back to such cruel people, the was back about 1985, we had him for many years but then lost him one hibernation!!

I had hoped that people would know better by now and should not be happening today!!

I have to say when it comes to stories like this or any animal being treated so bad, it makes really hate people!!!

Leggy.... I can't believe that it is still happening!!

A visitor here recently told us that his aunt had a tort when he was younger and she had a hole in the shell with a rope

My auntie has a rescue tort called Pam who has hole at the back of her shell. Poor little love. Its fine now(shes 70) but I would have thought at the time she wasn't. ITs crazy that they didn't have the common sense to realise it would hurt when all they need to do is stroke their shell to see how much they react!

I don't agree with docking but there are a lot of breeds and breeders still practising and I'm not sure if those breeds that are usually docked would be allowed to be shown otherwise, I may be wrong on that but breeds like the boxer, certain spaniels, dobermen etc are I'm sure still done if I'm right then untill the kennel club changing its regulations then it will still go on, maybe someone knows better? but I think it is still legal for vets to dock but its up to them.
