My Hermanns tort Clicking when Breathing
Hi folks. Havent been on for a while. Nice mods to the site!!
My baby tort which i have had a few months now is clicking when breathing which i hope is normal?? he only seems to do it when i put my head down to him to listen. I have been working away this last month and wife is taking care of tort, doing a wonderfull job. Since i have had him he doesnt seem to have grown and his weight is the same. 25g and 47mm long. is this ok? The last few weeks he has had to be wakened up every day then he eats fine baths and drinks ok. urates fine and poos. Is he in need of his first hibernation and trying to wind down or what? He seems fine in every way just lazy!! temps are 30 under lamp and 18 cool end. Any advice appreciated Thanks Liam |

how much are you feeding him
he does seem a little underweight, there is a ratio chart for hatchlings on here how old is he where did you get him from a breeder or shop etc, have you ever had him checked for worms and parasites my torts all make a little clicking noise when i put them near my ear, as long as there is no bubbles it should be ok he should be gaining about 2/3 g a month, how long you had him

i would check for worms and parasites asap, or just go straight for the pancure if he has never been de-wormed.

Hi i have had him for around three months and he is fed as much weeds as he wants. he only eats what he wants and then wanders of to bed. His appetite when i got him was much better than now. he was originally fed on pellets before i got him and he adapted well to the change. Could it be him wanting to hibernate?
Had a sample checked when i got him which was fine should i have another done? He did come from a shop where he had another hatchling with him. Could he still be pining for his brother or sister? lonely or not? He is dry around his nose no bubbles. |

I would up the temperatures a little, so its 32ihs under the light, and 25 at the cooler end. The change in the weather has slowed all my tortoises down. Although we have bright sunshine at the moment with heavy showers. The first time my aduts have been out in the last few days. Their choice.

he could be sluggish/sleepy as he has worms, i would get him checked for it at the vets
he could be winding down for the winter, but before hibernation you need to make sure hes right weight and not has worms i would not just worm him as it messes with there gut flora , only worm if necessary hope this helps

Ok Thanks for your replies.
I will Have another sample checked and i have upped the temps so we will wait and see. They were lower than i thought. 27 basking which i asume is way to low! the thermometer i have takes so long to rise its hard to tell. How long should i leave it under light? its one with the probe on it. Thanks Liam |

It could be just too much of a temp difference for him, and maybe a tad low in the basking area. Chances are when you get the temps upped he will be fine, and more energetic. I have a temp probe thing I leave it for about 3 mins, but that is just to make sure I get the right temp, as sometimes it takes a while to get up to the temp it is. It may just be your little tortoise does not like the difference in temps, maybe up the temp like Sandy said in the cooler end, as 18c does seem a tad low for day time temps. He/she should be fine but, do look out for any discharge or bubbles from his nose as it may be a mild case of RNS and may need a trip to vet to get some Baytryl (sorry I cant spell)
Good luck, I am sure he will be running around in no time Anna x

Well he seems a bit livlier today since i upped the temps to 32 and 23.
Must have been the cooler temps. Cant understand why its so much colder than the last time i checked the temps with the lamp never having been moved? Could it have dropped as the outside temps dropped? Cheers Liam |
