Default aldabra- advice on avoiding scams

Hi All,

As you know I am looking to add some giants to my family over the next year. I have been in touch with a breeder and supplier from the Seychells and all seems OK.

However the methods of payment is wire transfer to a US bank and this makes me nervous.

I wonder could you please advise me on what proof, confirmation, licences etc I should ask to see before any payment is made.

I have researched all I can to try to satisfy myself that it is a genuine supplier and I can't find anything to suggest otherwize and the lady I have been dealing with is extremely knowledgeable, helpful and seems very geniune too.

I just want to be careful.

Can anyone help or advise please as I don't need to speculate as to whether it is genuine or a scam because as I said, I don't think it is- I just need to be able to confirm the status somehow but am unsure as to how to do this!!!

You'd need an import permit to get it into the UK has any mention of that been made?

I presume they would also need an export permit, and health certificates to be able to export it from Seychelles.

I certainly would be very wary about wire transfers, as that would leave you totally exposed.

Hi, Yes all that has been mentioned and more-

Import Instructions for me on what I need to do
Export arrangements from them inc vets cert and Cites
Wooden crates made to measure inline with regulations
The fact that tort bigger than 12" cannot be shipped by law from Seychells
The fact that seychells don't carry out invasive sexing examinations

It seems good and the lady is extremely thorough and knowledgable. I want to post the company name but will not be allowed in line with the rules of the forum.

Thanks Bindi, I have just spoken to a member on here who knows of them and says they have heard good things. I will confirm with Ed and Dan too. It's just so much money and I wanted to be careful, which is no reflection on the lady or company as they would actually be my first choice supplier from what I have seen and the lady is terrific and so helpful and she has a genuine interest in the happiness and wellbeing of her torts from what I can gather.

I just read about stuff in the news and on forums and it scares me!!!!

Hi All,

Just me again to say that I have spoken with Dan and he said I will be OK and that there are people on here that have happily bought from them. I thought I would be OK, like I said they seem fab but almost too good to be true compared to some other places I have looked at and dealt with, I'm just a worrier but better to be safe than sorry. And believe me I would have been very sorry for myself!!!!

Oh wow I'm getting excited now!!!!!

Thanks everyone

There are many who are selling those tortosies in the UK.

You get what you pay for.

You will wire the money... you will eventually get your tortoise.

As far as future support... It's really interesting that I'm always helping people who buy from other sources. Maybe I should rethink my generosity.

I'm assuming you are dealing with Aldabras.com.

The bottom line is you have to trust her. I think you can but the helpfulness ends at the sale.

Also... she has very little experience keeping the tortoises. Her family owns the tortoises and I'm sure there is a paid keeper.
