Default Vitashell

Hi,
I have seen this product on a few forums, Vitashell, I guess it's a cream type product.
My tort is in great health and shape, would this stuff make any difference to him or is it a 'snakeoil' product?

I've always thought and read that you don't put anything on the shell as its porous, any creams/lotions, oils could therefore block up the tiny holes or be absorbed into the body. However I've never heard of this product and must assume that research has gone into it but to be honest the torts shell shouldn't need anything other than water on it, if we wanted shiny torts we'd buy a china one.

I read the same about porous shells. My tort likes mud too much to be vain about his appearance

Actually the scute material isn't porus, it's on the same idea as our finger nails (which we put all kind of junk on and it doesn't get in our bodies ). Vitashell is fine to put on but unless scute seams are sticking together it's not needed.

Danny if the shell isn't porous why is it so bad to use a natural oil etc such as oil oil, us women put all sorts of oils and creams on our nails, why the 'myth' if that about oiling the shell. I as most just believed what we were told, I know you use hoof oil on horses without doing any harm, many would like to be able to 'oil' their torts shell and many still do.

Oil on the shell can heat up quickly and mean the tort doesn't stay in the sun for as long as it would do. Or so I've heard.

Well, where would they get oiled in the wild?

I'm not usually one to harp on about "must keep in conditions as near to wild as possible" simply because they don't have cages or tables in the wild, nor a light bulb giving heat and UV, but would something provide oil in the natural environment? Ie dirty puddles or whatever?

Not sure why anyone is bothering with this product. Tortoises only have rain water to clean their shells. And they are still with us millions of years later.
Just another product to make a profit, with not real use to tortoises:0)+
