Personally if members dont have outside areas for tortoises to roam. They are being cruel, maybe
not intentionally but thats what tortoises do. Its part of their life cycle.
Sorry but true.

sandy I FULLY AGREE with you

and would fully advise anybody without a garden to wait before getting a tort, a garen is 1 of the vital things a tort needs

but

there does seem to be a few members without gardens who already have torts

and my curiosity was how could these people be best advised so that they can give the best to thier torts whilst hopefully waiting for a home with a gardn to become avaiable

i live in a 3 bedroomed flat, with just a balcony, we have no garden near by, so i let my tortoise roam up an down the balcony with me supervising them.
then they roam my living room, bedroom and then my hall way.

once every few days i go over my granddads, and let them roam his garden for a few hours.

or the field near by...now that its been cut down and neatened its safe.
now when you say its cruel...no offence but your so wrong about that, tortoises do not need grass...you lot say make sure there out door enclosure has soil in it (some even say most of it soil)
So no its not cruel...maby some of us can make a largish out door enclosure for our balconys if we live in a flat and make them so there long and very wide....and half it with soil and then half grass and plants.
so no its not cruel as you say

It IS cruel.
They don't mean that they need grass, the mean that they need OUTSIDE accomadation, the only way tp provide this properly is with a garden, or a balcony tortoise table on legs or something.
You are being cruel, and you should have thought about that before buying tortoises.
Am i right in thinking you keep Jerry in a tank too?

I beg to differ about the grass, all my tortoises graze on grass, which has weeds in it also.
But its the fact of having the freedom to do as they please, rather than being shut up in an
indoor enclosure that concerns me.
The cruelty lies in the fact they dont have large areas to roam in, but thats my personal view.

I must agree outdoor housing is a must. I also find mine love to graze on grass and have now created a small patch of grass within my hermanns enclousure whilst my gracea gracea has access to the lawn. But like Josh has said it isn;t just for the grass its a good opertunity for them to get excercise, fresh air and of course natural sunlight. I would also say if you cannot provide outdoor space dont get tortoises.

But, I have known on smaller tortoises (like cpx has) to get tangled up in grass and get chocked to death,
Grass is great for adults, but Personally, i wouldn't put my torts on grass, except digger, as hes an adult.
