minor shell damage
can be affected by shell rot either bacterial or fungal
agression from another tort
accidents

incorrect husbandry can affect the shell
eg to humid to dry
unclean substrate eg high levels of urine and faeces
and thus allow bacteria or fungi to penetrate and cause rot

edited to say gary has only had the tort 1 day
so non of the above are directed at gary's husbandry or care

I advise removing any loose shell MUST BE loose give it a gental scrub with a soft bush. If the dead shell is not removed infection can set in.
Then get some iodine on it.

Alicia, I see from the picture of the enclosure that his clamp lamp is on the side of the enclosure and looks like it's a heat/UVB combination bulb. When I first got mine I also did that and the temps at the hotspot were away over 40c but apart from that, if the bulb is a Solar Glo it says on the instructions that it must only be used vertically and failure to do so will cause it to work incorrectly, reduce it's life drastically and invalidate the warranty.

Has he checked the hot spot temps?

My bulb is 125watt solar glo and the height of my enclosure sides are 8inches

thanks alicia for uploading . and thanks to people that are giving advice its appreciated. i took little shelley to my local vet today and before he took alook at her he did say that he doesnt know much about reptiles :\ so i am trying to find near by help. but in the mean time it wont hurt to do what sarah said just incase. the vet seems to think that its health is good, and is the right weight for its size but that its shell looks abit beaten up but he said it deffo doesnt have shell rot but yet again he doesnt know much (he advised me to give it worms and iceberg lettuce !!:O). its only temorary that the clamp is on the side its about 26cm from tile. the hot spot is about 30-32c and cold 20c i am trying to get one of them clamp lamp stands because it would be ideal only ebay so far have them £40 being a small price to pay for a healthy and happy tortoise. cheers again folks

Aye the stands are a bit steep. You could make a goalpost type frame to go over it instead and clamp the lamp to that. Just a bit of 2"x1" up either side and a bit across the top

Oh dear -- he advised you to feed a horsfield worms and iceberg lettuce?! I think you should seriously think about seeing another vet. There is a really good vet in Scotland called Romain Pizzi. The practice is called Inglis, Loudon and Davidson, and it's in Dunfermline -- 01383 722818 inglisvets@yahoo.co.uk
There is also Leesa Longley at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh --tel: 0131 6507650.

Good luck,
